Hydroelectric Turbine Generator
non-adjustable permanent magnet alternator
1200 Watts max rated output
up to 4 nozzles, 12/24/48Vdc

These APM hydroelectric turbines are built in two parts to make jet changes and maintenance as easy as possible. The bottom half contains the water box, nozzles and jets, piping and/or manifold and is intended to be mounted down permanent. The top half rests on top of the bottom half and is sealed by a rubber sheet gasket. Four wing nuts hold it down. It takes about 2 minutes to open it up and change jet sizes. Our product is unique in its ease of maintenance and is greatly appreciated by people who have previously owned competitors’ products.

The water box mounts over a 14” X 14” square hole. Water discharge is out the bottom. The water box is available in one thru four nozzle versions with or without valves and several different manifold or pipe options. Standard jet sizes are from .125” to .760” with best efficiencies falling between .250” and .620”.

The standard runner (Pelton wheel) is made of a structural polymer known under the trade name DELRIN which resists wear from silt and sand. It wears at about 1/5th the rate of bronze runners. Optional runners are made of 416 stainless or bronze and are also more efficient but they are more expensive.

The power head (top half) comes in about 250 different versions at present to best match your site potential. Wound field units are still available for those on a budget or for applications needing higher wattage out of a single turbine than is possible with the PM’s at present. But the most popular units are of course the Permanent Magnet models with higher efficiency and almost no maintenance. These enhanced models come in 1200 Watt through 2500 Watt versions and feature stronger magnets and thicker stators which improve efficiencies and make the larger outputs possible.

A parts kit and jet assortment is included with a complete turbine. On standard units we also include a spare runner to eliminate down time if the DELRIN runner breaks. Simply return the runner and we will repair it for free. Breakage is almost always caused by a rock, twig, or air in the pipeline which will not be present in a properly installed penstock.

This model 1200PM permanent magnet alternator features a 3-phase stator offering 20-30% more output than a comparable wound field unit. Available in 12 to 480 volts AC or DC. The AC models are wild (uncontrolled) frequency for use with a step down transformer/rectifier for long distance transmission to a battery based system. The step down unit is sold separately. DC models are MPPT controller compatible. Electrically isolated with outdoor PVC junction box. Magnet strength is adjustable. Some have reconfigurable stators for applications with highly variable flow rates. 1350 Watts maximum for this model is possible but its target is low flow applications under 500 Watts potential.

Warranty is 3 years and covers most everything reasonable. But keep in mind that most wound field units will need brush and bearing replacement before that.

Please tell us your head, flow, pipe size and length, and battery voltage when ordering using the drop-down menus below.

Power output is affected by many factors, the most important being and flow rate and head pressure at the turbine. This in turn is affected by the penstock pipe length and diameter. To get a rough idea of your site power potential and the output of this turbine use our online calculator at this link. This calculator also determines the minimum recommended penstock pipe size. The table below also provides approximate output at selected operating points.

DC cable length and voltage drop must be evaluated carefully when laying out system.  Click here for our simple voltage drop calculator.  If the turbine will be located far from the battery bank, voltage drop and wire cost can be reduced by using the higher Voltage 48Vdc unit.

NOTES:
1) All figures based on 68.4° F water temperature and 50% turbine efficiency.
2) Warmer water increases Watts (W) output: at 86°F add 10%.
3) Colder water decreases output: at 60°F subtract 5%, 55°F -10%,  46°F -20%,  41°F -30%, 36°F -40%, 32°F -50%.
4) Watts output may be higher in middle of ranges and less near upper and lower limits.
5) Some runners may not be suitable for use at higher head pressures.
