APM Air Diversion Loads

Introduction

Diversion loads are used to dissipate extra electricity from wind and hydroelectric turbines to prevent overcharging batteries and over-speed conditions.  Use the following formulas to compute and convert the electrical parameters.

     To calculate current:   Amps = Volts ÷ Ohms

     To calculate power:     Watts = Volts x Volts ÷ Ohms

                                     Watts = Volts x Amps

Do not exceed maximum rated Wattages.

 

APM Enclosed Versions - 12/24/48V

These resistive loads are built to operate at 100% duty cycle in a 50° C ambient without a cooling fan at the rated Watts at the usual equalization voltage commonly found in lead acid battery-based systems. At normal charging Voltage the Amperage will be 5-10% less and the Watt dissipated will be 10-15% lower. Oversize the unit a little (125% of the potential power source) when using the load unit for hydro, wind, or solar diversion.

Mounting must be on a suitable fireproof vertical support for height and width, with other fireproofing materials as needed. It should be at least 12" from any flammable material. It must also be kept free and clear of combustible materials and falling debris. This is the user's responsibility! These units can be a significant source of heat and could be dangerous in the wrong hands. This is an industrial grade product and is not UL Listed.

CAUTION: These heaters should be checked annually for bad or burnt connections resulting in excessive heat from loose wires or incorrectly set systems. If not correctly set, generator power could be diverted into the heater. Look for burnt, discolored wires or broken resistors.
